Animal eye tracking is fantastic for perfect focus - if the subject moves. A slow, stealthy heron? Not so much! The camera struggled to focus, and I wish I’d relied on trusty manual focus and my own eyes! But manual focus was tricky, too – the sunset behind silhouetted the heron, adding fuzziness, plus heat haze made it look wavy and soft. Then there’s post-production workflow - yikes! 76GB files for short clips because I shot in 4K 4096x2160 at 100fps (super slomo). I had to speed it up because slomo isn’t great for a slow-moving heron! Processing in Avid Media Composer was an experience - used FrameFlex for the first time to punch in closer (maybe too much, losing quality, but getting a better view of the fish being eaten). I experimented with resolutions and workflows, crashed Avid multiple times, and got very frustrated! Filmed on the Isle of Harris at the start of the Sea Eagle hide walk - which I never made! The walk was two hours, and I’d arrived via a narrow single-track mountain road in my clunky VW T4 at golden hour. Didn’t want to get stuck after dark! I’d already driven to four locations on the Bird of Prey Trail and found no wildlife - not even a duck! I had to cut some decent heron shots to keep the clip short and sweet. I also need more gear - a better tripod, a 4K monitor, a faster external drive. The lengths we go to as filmmakers! Days in the making, not counting prep.
