Filming and Directing for BBC4 ‘Inside the Bat Cave’ - an experiment looking at how bats use the Doppler Effect to navigate. An onscreen study in conjunction with the University of Bristol. Complicated stuff! (note: a Pelicase comes in handy for many purposes!)

Stories change how people think, feel and act.

For decades Fin Films has helped broadcasters, charities, environmental organisations and communities communicate complex ideas through powerful storytelling. Through Fin Films, that experience is now helping organisations communicate what matters through story, film and engagement.

Whether directing BBC documentaries, creating strong visual campaigns for WWF-UK, leading communications projects for environmental organisations, or helping local communities tell their own stories, Fin Films’ work has always had the same purpose:

To help people connect with what matters.

Fin Films works with social-change charities, environmental organisations, community groups and purpose-led businesses through:

• Story Direction

• Communications

• Documentary, campaign and social video content

• Training and workshops

• Nature and community engagement

From strategy through to delivery, Fin Films helps organisations communicate complex ideas in ways that inspire action. Depending on the project, this might include story development, communications strategy, web articles, press features, social and digital content, documentary production, campaign films or training. Every project begins with the same question: what is the story people need to understand?

The founder…

Fin Films was set up by Janine Finlay - an RTS Award-winning filmmaker with more than 20 years’ experience in broadcast television in both New Zealand and the UK.

Janine had the incredible opportunity of setting up and leading the film unit for World Wildlife Fund (WWF-UK), and her films have taken her from the cotton fields of India to the rubbish dumps of Mexico City, from climate conferences to the wilds of the Scottish Highlands. She’s been described by the BBC as “extremely creative,” and by WWF as “fearless.” Her work has earned her an RTS Award for Science and History Documentary, two BAFTA nominations, and recognition from Celtic Media Awards and Soho Shorts.

Janine was one of only 16 filmmakers across Europe selected for the Discovery Campus Masterschool, where she developed her documentary Oh No Not Another Documentary About Climate Change alongside leading industry mentors. She also holds a Distinction in Creative Writing from The Open University - storytelling is always at the core.

Janine is constantly seeking stories that connect people to place, ecology, and wonder. Based in Scotland, she is surrounded by wild inspiration - and now channels this connection into a new evolution of her work:

Fin Films is also producing short, high-quality 4K wildlife videos, blending Janine’s film-making experience with her growing ecological skill set. These films combine cinematic beauty with species identification tips and nature insights, helping audiences slow down and notice the world around them.
