Filming and Directing for BBC4 ‘Inside the Bat Cave’ - an experiment looking at how bats use the Doppler Effect to navigate. An onscreen study in conjunction with the University of Bristol. Complicated stuff! (note: a Pelicase comes in handy for all sorts!)
Fin Films specialises in powerful, creative storytelling about science, the natural world, and its people, and is run by Janine Finlay - an RTS Award-winning filmmaker with more than 20 years’ experience in broadcast television in both New Zealand and the UK.
Janine had the incredible opportunity of setting up and leading the film unit for World Wildlife Fund (WWF-UK), and her films have taken her from the cotton fields of India to the rubbish dumps of Mexico City, from climate conferences to the wilds of the Scottish Highlands. She’s been described by the BBC as “extremely creative,” and by WWF as “fearless.” Her work has earned her an RTS Award for Science and History Documentary, a BAFTA nomination, and recognition from Celtic Media Awards and Soho Shorts.
Fin Films regularly collaborates with some of the most talented and creative professionals in the UK to produce professional content for broadcasters and NGOs. This includes everything from writing scripts to directing high-end documentaries, filming on the latest cameras and making environmental campaign films.
Driven by a deep reverence for the natural world, Janine is constantly seeking stories that connect people to place, ecology, and wonder. Based in Scotland, she is surrounded by wild inspiration - and now channels this connection into a new evolution of her work:
Fin Films is also producing short, high-quality 4K wildlife videos, blending Janine’s film-making experience with her growing ecological skillset. These films combine cinematic beauty with species identification tips and nature insights, helping audiences slow down and notice the world around them.
Janine now holds a formal qualification in Ecological Surveying, and this builds on a toolkit that already includes training in ecopsychology, science foundation (Open University), outdoor first aid, and Summer Mountain Leader (partially completed).
She was one of only 16 filmmakers across Europe selected for the Discovery Campus Masterschool, where she developed her documentary Oh No Not Another Documentary About Climate Change alongside leading industry mentors. She also holds a Distinction in Creative Writing from The Open University - storytelling is always at the core.
